Print
Helsinki, Finland, 15 September 2010 -- The annual maintenance shutdown at UPM's Fray Bentos pulp mill in Uruguay is planned to begin 21 October 2010 and will last an estimated three weeks.

In addition to the normal annual maintenance works, super heaters in the recovery boiler will be replaced. Consequently, the maintenance shutdown will last about one week longer than usually. The production loss of the outage is estimated to be about 70,000 metric tons.

During the maintenance period, almost 1000 additional workers will be working onsite.

The UPM Fray Bentos pulp mill is located along the Uruguay River, 4 km east of Fray Bentos, in Uruguay. The mill's annual production capacity is about 1.1 million metric tons of bleached eucalyptus pulp, which is suitable for manufacturing fine, magazine, carton, and tissue papers. The mill started operation in November 2007 and is among the most modern in the world. Designed with the latest technologies available, the mill operates in compliance with the strictest standards set by the European Union and Uruguayan legislation.

UPM products are made of renewable raw materials and are recyclable. UPM consists of three business groups: Energy and pulp, Paper, and Engineered materials. UPM employs around 24,000 people and has production facilities in 15 countries. In 2008, UPM's sales amounted to EUR 9.5 billion. UPM's shares are listed on the Helsinki stock exchange.
