The Final Word by Jim Thompson

The opening editorial, at the beginning of this issue, provides insight into why the Talo Analytic and Paperitalo Publications organization has not shown much interest or given much press to the broad category of bio-fuels over the years.  Admittedly, bio-fuels covers much more than solid fuels, but nevertheless, it has always been our feeling that there is a coming ultimate showdown between energy interests and environmental interests that will focus on the issue of bio-fuels.  For instance, adding wood pellets to coal fired boilers to accommodate some legislators’ ideas of renewable energy must necessarily be a short term game.  Carbon taxes, which are very likely in the near future, complicate the economics of liquid bio-fuels.  Subsidies can never be counted on, especially to last long enough to retire the investment in any bio-fuel processes.

Hence we continue to watch, but at a distance.  Wethinks emotionalism is blinding pragmatism in this case.
