Smurfit Kappa Opens its First Recycling Platform in Italy
Print

Dublin, Ireland 27 March 2019 -- Smurfit Kappa has started sorting recovered paper in Italy. This allows the group not only to better serve its Tuscan paper mill with raw material, but also to act as a supplier on the recovered paper market.

The Smurfit Kappa Group (SKG) has opened its first recycling platform for recovered paper in Italy. A company spokesperson told EUWID that the new facility in Capannori in the province of Lucca in Italy's Tuscany region had started operations on 15 March.

Maximum handling capacity of the site, which has not yet been fully reached, is 25,000 tpy of recovered paper. An expansion to 35,000 tpy is reportedly envisaged but not yet concretely planned. At the moment, the site has 6 employees.

The new platform is first of all set to supply SKG's paper mills with raw material. However, a part of the material would surely be sold on the free market, the spokesperson said, adding that the share of this recovered paper would vary depending on current market conditions.
