SCA to Install New Lime Kiln at Munksund Mill
Print

Stockholm, Sweden 19 October 2012 -- SCA has announced its decision to install a new lime kiln at its Munksund kraftliner mill in Sweden. The lime kiln would substitute fossil oil with biofuel, SCA said, adding that this would reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 75%. The new lime kiln is scheduled to become operational in fall 2014.

According to SCA, SEK490m (around €56.9m) are to be spent for the project. Annual cost savings are expected to amount to SEK50m (€5.8m).

SCA said the new lime kiln would lead to a certain increase in the production of kraftliner at the mill, but more importantly it would allow for a positive development of production and products. In addition, the company was able to produce a broader portfolio and products with a higher quality in future.

At the end of 2011, SCA had inaugurated a biofuel-fired lime kiln at its Östrand pulp mill in Sweden. “The good experience from there is now brought into the project in Munksund,” the company said.

SCA produces unbleached as well as white-top kraftliner with an annual capacity of 365,000 t at the Munksund mill.
