Print

Zaragoza, Spain 29 April 2013 -- On 24 April, Saica Paper officially opened its new PM 11 in Partington. The inauguration marked the final part of the Spanish paper company's plan to become an integrated player in the UK market.

The new mill started operations on 15 January 2012. PM 11 has a design speed of 1,500 m/min of lightweight recycled corrugated case materials in the 75-135gsm range and has an annual production capacity of 400,000 t.

During its first year of operation PM 11 produced 301,000 t of paper, 65% of which were converted in Saica Pack's 16 corrugated plants in the UK, Saica's President Ramón Alejandro explained in an interview with EUWID. In 2013, PM 11 is budgeted to produce 360,000 t. Eventually, 80% of the mills production are to be sold internally within Saica UK.

Speaking ahead of the inauguration Ramón Alejandro said: “This is a significant investment for Saica and demonstrates our commitment to both our UK customers and boosting the wider economy."

Rt Hon Michael Fallon MP, Minister of State for Business and Energy, who inaugurated the facility by "tearing the paper" with Councillor Patricia Young, Mayor of Trafford, said: "I would like to thank you officially on behalf of Prime Minister David Cameron and the British Government for seeing the business potential in the United Kingdom and bringing this investment to our shores."

Saica has invested close to £500m in the UK since its first step onto the market with the acquisition of three corrugated plants from International Paper in 2006. In 2008, the company took over 19 corrugated plants from SCA and undertook a £66m investment and restructuring programme. Several plants were closed, while investments in expanding buildings, facilities and production capability took place at Wigan, Thrapston and other sites. Two new corrugators were set up in Wigan and Thrapston, together with automatic material handling systems, transfers and upgrades of converting and corrugating kit and refurbishments of a number of facilities.

Today, Saica Paper, Saica Pack and Saica Natur together employ more than 1,800 people in the UK and Ireland.
