Phoenix Paper Wickliffe, LLC, successfully restarts operations

WICKLFFE, Ky. (News release) -- On Wednesday, May 29, 2019, at 12:45 a.m., Phoenix Paper Wickliffe, LLC, successfully restarted operations of the Wickliffe, Kentucky paper mill.

The first roll of bleached hardwood pulp was safely produced through the diligent effort of the mill team, the company said.

"A lot of hard work by many people went into making this a safe and successful startup," stated Craig Tatum, General Manager. "It is an honor to be a part of such a dedicated and committed team."

"This is an exciting day for Phoenix Paper, the people of Ballard County, Western Kentucky, and Shanying International," stated Tom Lawson, Director of Strategy NA. "The restart of the Wickliffe Mill is the first step in our strategy of growth in North America."

Once fully optimized, the mill will produce approximately 300,000 tons of product per year. Currently, Phoenix Paper employs approximately 224 individuals at the Wickliffe site.

When the previous owner, Verso, officially closed July 1, 2016, More than 300 people lost their jobs. Phoenix Paper -- owned by Chinese manufacturer Shanying International -- bought the mill last year.
