RUSSIA (News release) -- Mondi Syktyvkar has completes a major step in the modernisation of its state of the art power plant, with a capital investment of around Euro135 million. The investment in the power plant, including a new bark boiler, new steam turbine and upgrade of power distribution network, further improves the environmental performance of the mill.

This investment supports Mondi's ambition to transition to a low-carbon economy and reduces the mill's CO2 footprint by more than 200,000 tonnes annually - equating to c.4% reduction of CO2 for the entire Mondi Group.

Mondi Syktyvkar worked with Valmet as main equipment supplier to execute this transformation. This project will allow the plant to significantly improve its environmental performance and to decrease greenhouse gas emissions.

Klaus Peller, Managing Director of Mondi Syktyvkar, said: "The power plant is a key part of the mill infrastructure. It also provides over 15% of electric energy demand within the Komi Republic, Russia and is a single heating source for the Ezhva district with a population of 60,000 people. Through significant investment and efforts of a highly professional team we have installed a state of the art power plant which will ensure stable generation of heat and electric energy for the mill and the surrounding region, and reduce the overall environmental footprint of the mill as we move towards a low-carbon economy."
