Investing in Climate Action at Resolute's Kénogami Mill
Print

QUEBEC (News release) -- Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions at our Kénogami (Quebec) paper mill are set to decrease by approximately 10,000 tons of CO2 equivalent each year, thanks to a $5.5 million investment announced in March 2021. The Quebec Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources's ÉcoPerformance program contributed nearly $4.1 million in financial support toward the project.

Resolute will move quickly to launch some components, namely: optimizing the pulp-refining process with pressurized refiners and generating energy from the recovered steam. Steam recovery will allow the mill to cut down on the use of its natural gas boiler, decreasing GHG emissions.

"This project is aligned with Resolute's commitment to responsibly manage our environmental footprint, as well as the Government of Quebec's support for climate initiatives. Our company, like the forest products industry as a whole, understands the collective role we play in reducing GHG emissions," said Remi G. Lalonde, president and chief executive officer.

"These are exciting times for Resolute, and for our mill," said Stéphane Deshaies, general manager at the Kénogami mill. "As we continue to develop cellulose filaments in collaboration with our partners, this optimization project will allow us to further consolidate our network of operations while reducing our carbon footprint."

Resolute's announcement comes as governments, the public and the business community advocate for a green recovery in the post-pandemic economy. It is also in line with Resolute's recent announcement to reduce absolute GHG emissions (scope 1 and 2) by 30% by 2025 against 2015 levels.
