HAMMOND, Ind. (From news reports) -- Finland-based Huhtamaki North America says it will invest $100 million to expand its facility in Hammond. The packaging manufacturer says the 250,000-square-foot addition will result in about 100 new jobs when its operational in 2023.

The company says the project will allow the company to add capacity for their molded fiber products. The company makes packaging for consumer goods, retail and foodservice markets.

Huhtamaki's Hammond plant manager Rich Blastic said the company hopes to make all of its products recyclable, compostable or reusable by 2030.

"The design of this new facility will provide the capability to build another world-class asset," said Rich Blastic, Hammond plant manager. "We plan to continue on our path of building 21st century work environments that are good for our customers, employees and communities. We are very excited for this project and looking forward to the growth it will create for our company."

Blastic said the company would like to see the expansion completed in either late 2022 or early 2023 with construction beginning this summer.

In addition to foodservice and consumer goods packaging, Huhtamaki also produces cups, folding cartons, and Chinet-brand tableware.

"The City of Hammond is very excited about the expansion of one of our core companies in Hammond," said Mayor Tom McDermott. "We worked hard with Huhtamaki's team to keep them here and will continue to assist them as they grow into an even stronger facility. We are thrilled with their re-investment in Hammond, their growth of jobs and their continued commitment to Hammond."
