Firefighters battle a 3-alarm blaze at Pixelle Spring Grove paper mill
Print

PENNSYLVANIA (From news reports) -- First responders battled a three-alarm fire at the Pixelle Specialty Solutions paper mill in Spring Grove Saturday, Feb. 25, according to 911 calls and York County Emergency Management spokesman Ted Czech.

The facility is on Main Street in the borough.

Czech said the first call was at 11:43 a.m. At 1:11 p.m., it became a third-alarm fire.

Three firefighters were evaluated for injuries, Garrett R. Strouse, fire chief of Friendship Hose Company #1 in Spring Grove, said in a news release. Two sustained minor injuries and were taken to a hospital. Both were treated and released. A third firefighter was not transported.

Strouse said the response was manpower intensive because of the need to traverse the large facility to reach where the fire was located. The York County Hazmat Team continuously monitored the conditions, and "there were no concerns for any public safety hazards."

In a Facebook post, Pixelle said the fire started at the hard wood digester. "We will be assessing the damage. Thank you to the local fire companies and our employees for the quick response," the company wrote.

In the 1:15 p.m. post, the company said, "The fire was contained and extinguished and no one was injured," although 911 calls indicated firefighters were still actively working at the scene after that time.

Seventeen fire companies with 35 units responded to the fire, Strouse said. More than 80 firefighters were on the scene. The fire department thanked those companies as well as WellSpan EMS, Community Life Team EMS, the York County Hazmat Team and York County Regional Police for their help.
