Citing declining print volumes, Quad/Graphics to close three more plants
Print
SUSSEX, Wisc. (From news reports) -- Quad/Graphics Inc. will close three more commercial printing plants -- idling 650 employees.

The Sussex-based company cited "volume declines" for closing the plants in Oklahoma City; Nashville, Tennessee; and Fernley, Nevada.

The company attributed the decreased volumes in part to "an already challenging retail environment" that has been exacerbated by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Quad/Graphics' commercial printing revenue for the nine months ending Sept. 30 was down 29% to $1.59 billion compared with $2.25 billion in the same period of 2019.

Earlier this year, Quad closed four plants and eliminated 1,100 jobs. Those plants were in Taunton, Massachusetts; Charlotte, North Carolina; Portland, Oregon; and Riverside, California.

The company previously ran two plants in Riverside and consolidated them into one facility.

Quad continues running Wisconsin plants in West Allis, Sussex, Hartford, Lomira, Pewaukee, Burlington and New Berlin. Quad said work performed in the plants that are closing will be consolidated into other locations, including those in Wisconsin.

The Oklahoma City plant has the most employees of the latest group at 400 and will close in March 2021. Quad opened the plant in 2003 and it produces magazines, catalogs and retail advertising inserts.

The Nevada plant has 75 employees and will close in January 2021. The plant specializes in retail advertising inserts.

The Nashville plant will close in April 2021 and has 175 employees and also specializes in retail advertising inserts.
