Burgo Launches EIA for a Waste-to-Energy Plant at the Duino Mill
Print

Vicenza, Italy 19 September 2018 -- Conversion of the mothballed LWC paper machine PM 2 to recycled board production remains an option.

Italy's Burgo has launched an environmental impact assessment (EIA) procedure for a potential waste-to-energy (WtE) plant to be build at the company's Cartiera di Timavo mill in Duino. According to project documentation, the company is opting for a WtE facility employing pyrogasification technology that can process some 22,000 t of pulper waste and residues arising from recycled board manufacturing.

The initiative to install an WtE plant at the Duino mill is reportedly settled within the framework of the negotiations with Italy's coreboard producer Cartiera di Ferrara on the possible acquisition of the idled magazine paper machine PM 2 and its conversion to recycled board production. Information from the regional government of Friuli-Venezia Giulia indicates that Cartiera di Ferrara recently made any investment in Duino conditional on the construction of an energy from waste facility at the Duino site. The company hopes that this technology will help it to limit the cost of managing production waste an residues generated during recycled fibre stock preparation and recycled board production.
