Bucksport Mill Demolition Could Begin This Summer
Print

Bucksport, Maine, USA 30 June 2015 -- (From WCSH-TV) -- The Bucksport paper mill is inching closer to demolition.

Its owners, American Iron and Metal, held a public meeting to discuss that.

Maine's Department of Environmental Protection required the company to do this after rejecting AIM's first demolition application. If all goes according to the scrapper's plan, the mill could be gone in a year.

The meeting outlined the road ahead for residents. According to Bucksport Mayor Dave Keene, AIM even has a railroad company waiting to come down with cars and start loading debris.

After the state signs off on the demolition, the company must get approval from the town. Keene doesn't think that will be a long process because town leaders want to get whatever replaces the mill built as soon as possible.

The only additional requirement Bucksport may add is for AIM to sign a bond saying they will completely remove the mill. Town leaders do not want the company to take valuable pieces of it and leave work to be done to clear the site.

The mayor also thinks the town's relationship with the scrapper has improved since the winter.

"At first, I think people just thought they were going to strip what they could out of there, make their money and see you later and leave what's left behind," said Keene. "But I really think that they are going to concentrate on developing the site because I think they realize that they can make additional money on marketing it."

The mayor would personally like to see multiple small businesses replace the mill.

If the permit is granted soon, the demolition could begin in July or August.
