VCP Added to Dow Jones Sustainability Index
Print
São Paulo, Brazil, 04 September 2008 -- Votorantim Celulose e Papel S.A. ("VCP") has been named to the Dow Jones Sustainability Index 2008-2009, the international index with shares of the companies considered the most sustainable in the world.

Out of the 320 companies selected to the index, VCP is one of eight Brazilian companies and the only first-timer of the country. VCP is in the "Paper and Forestry" category in the "Basic Materials" segment, along with Aracruz.

Launched in 1999, the Dow Jones Sustainability Index is assessed by an independent Swiss researcher called SAM Group. The evaluation is made combining answers and evidences provided by the company along with media and stakeholder analyses.

For this 10th edition, SAM Group invited the 2545 largest companies in the world by market cap and it was the first time VCP was asked to take part in the assessment. The evaluation is made with a "best in class" approach for each industry to select the best 10% for the index, analyzing each company in three areas: economical; environmental, and social. These dimensions are weighted according to relevance to the business, with 2008 main focus on ecoefficiency.

To be in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index represents the recognition by an international institution of all VCP's efforts towards becoming a company that privides harmony between economics, society, and environment, creating value both to the shareholders and to the communities.
