New York, New York, USA, 30 January 2008 -- /PRNewswire/ -- The bard of directors of The McGraw-Hill Companies (NYSE: MHP) today approved a 7.3% increase in the regular quarterly cash dividend on the Corporation's common stock.

"This marks the 35th consecutive year that The McGraw-Hill Companies has increased its dividend, which underscores management's ongoing commitment to advancing shareholder value," said Harold McGraw III, chairman, president, and CEO of The McGraw-Hill Companies. "Our increased dividends, along with our stock repurchase program, has enabled us to return approximately USD 8.4 billion to shareholders since 1996 -- including approximately USD 2.5 billion in the past year," he said.

The quarterly dividend will increase from USD 0.205 to USD 0.22 per share. The dividend will be payable on 12 March 2008, to shareholders of record on 27 February 2008.

The new annualized rate of USD 0.88 per share represents an average compound annual dividend growth rate of 10.3% since 1974. The McGraw-Hill Companies has paid a dividend each year since 1937 and is one of fewer than 30 companies in the S&P 500 that has increased its dividend annually for the last 35 years.

To launch its 2008 share buyback activities, the corporation today announced it intends to initially repurchase 20.0 million shares, subject to market conditions, from the 28.0 million shares remaining in the corporation's 2007 share repurchase program. In October 2007, the board approved the repurchase of 35.0 million shares remaining under the stock repurchase program it approved in January 2007, and the corporation repurchased 7.0 million of these shares in the fourth quarter of 2007.
