Papier und Kartonfabrik Varel is Revamping its Paper Machine
Print

Varel, Germany, 28 March 2011 -- Papier und Kartonfabrik Varel is moving forward with the revamp of paper machine no. 4. The reconstruction of PM 4 to enlarge the company's product portfolio for white testliner and kraftliner has been a great challenge.

Some new installed components of the PM 4 are already in operation or nearly ready for start up.

A newly installed starch preparation device is allowing Varel to activate starch enzymatically. This process is more eco-friendly, because it eliminates the need to use chemical substances in the process. The cumulative energy balance also is significantly better compared with the thermochemical method. The new starch preparation plant has been in operation since the beginning of this year.

A new crane with a lift capacity of 80 tons has been installed. This crane will lift all components to their final positon during the revamp, from the beginning of April. Thereafter, the crane will be used for tambour lifts and for maintenance jobs.

A newly designed 90 m³ D-pulper is set to begin operation at the end of April. This unit will be used to supply pulp to PM 4-line 1.
