White Birch Paper to Limit Newsprint Production

Greenwich, Connecticut, USA, 16 December 2008 -- /PRNewswire/ -- White Birch Paper Company announced today that it will take market related downtime at its four paper mills in the first quarter of 2009. The planned shut-downs will result in approximately 25,000 metric tons of reduced newsprint production. The specific downtime taken at each mill will be determined on the basis of manufacturing and delivery costs at the time. Additional downtime will be taken throughout the year as required by market conditions. White Birch will maintain adequate inventories to ensure that its customers will not experience any service interruptions during the shut-downs.

White Birch Paper Company is the second largest newsprint manufacturer in North America, with approximately 1.25 million metric tons of uncoated groundwood production capacity. In addition to newsprint, White Birch produces uncoated specialty paper, directory paper, and paperboard at its mills located in Quebec City, Riviere-du-Loup, and Gatineau, Quebec, Canada, and Ashland, Virginia, USA.
