Around this time of year, people start asking me what I think the next year is going offer the pulp and paper industry. I have been striking out the last couple of years. 2011? Who knows? As usual, there does seem to be plenty of activity in packaging and tissue grades, but this is getting to be the norm. Some of the printing and writing people are trying to breathe new life into their products, but I suspect they have not yet begun to feel the effects of the iPad and all its clones, which are just now appearing on the market. I strongly suspect iPad and friends will leave printing and writing grades as relatively small niche markets. One niche that will grow, however, is due to Wikileaks. For it has become evident that if you have information you want to preserve and keep absolutely confidential, the best available technology is to put it on a piece of paper and lock that piece of paper in a vault.
