We will soon experience a startlingly new competition for pulp fiber in its basic form -— wood chips. Laws in are the making or, in some U.S. states, already on the books, that will make it imperative that electric utilities derive a significant portion of their energy from renewable resources. Those who have put the initial numbers together suggest that at the very least, wood will become more valuable, in its entirety, for energy than it is for pulp, and, if such programs are not modified, will most likely result in a total denuding of the United States.
