Improvements in energy efficiency seems to be a major theme among numerous paper producers.

According to an article by Forbes, 42% of the global coal capacity is currently unprofitable. Forbes goes further to state that renewable energy is beating coal on cost.

Many producers in the pulp and paper industry have already shifted their focus to renewable biomass.

The International Energy Agency stated that the pulp and paper industry can play an important role in the transition to a low-carbon energy sector.

The International Energy Agency recommends that through 2025, the pulp and paper industry should continue to focus on improving energy efficiency, moving towards BAT-level performance and increased recycling, while also supporting R&D efforts to develop future processes and technologies.

The International Energy Agency further states that the pulp and paper industry can also contribute to sustainable energy supply, by feeding excess heat and electricity into the grid.
