Firefighting operations wind down at Nippon Dynawave paper mill in Longview, remaining smoldering areas under control

LONGVIEW, Wash. (From news reports) -- Officials said on Saturday, July 22, only six small areas remain smoldering at the Nippon Dynawave site in Longview.

Firefighters are no longer required at the lumberyard after a fire broke out Tuesday night.

Nippon Dynawave and its contractors will continue to extinguish the smoldering piles.

Longview Fire Department Battalion Chiefs will check on the status of the operation on Saturday and will consult those in charge.

Officials say personnel on Friday removed sections of the elevated conveyors that posed a hazard of falling onto those working beneath.

The helicopters that had been used to drop water onto the piles were not used Friday and are not expected to be needed going forward.

Officials say the smoke being generated by the small piles is very light. Earlier in the week, air quality was an issue for Southwest Washington.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
