Corner Brook Pulp and Paper Managers Face Lay-offs

Hull, Quebec, Canada, 25 February 2010 --Tough economic times are once again taking a toll on the paper mill in Corner Brook, on Newfoundland's west coast, according to CBC News. Fifteen managers are being laid off at the Kruger-owned operation.

Earlier this month, the unionized workers voted to accept a 10% pay cut to help the company save money. Kruger has said it has to cut costs to keep operating. The mill in Corner Brook employs more than 500 people. Last summer, Kruger shut down one of the papermaking machines at the mill permanently, cutting 130 workers.

Unions at the mill are in talks with the company about other possible concessions in their contracts, but no one is saying how those talks are going.
