We are in trouble?
Comment Print

December is Energy Month here at Paperitalo Publications, and since we spoke last time, the 24th annual U.N. climate conference kicked off in Poland.

We have often maintained that energy is political, and a Washington Post headline proclaimed "'We are in trouble.' Global carbon emissions reached a record high in 2018."

"We are in trouble. We are in deep trouble with climate change," United Nations Secretary General António Guterres said at the opening of the conference, where countries will wrestle with the ambitious goals they need to meet to sharply reduce carbon emissions in the coming years.

"It is hard to overstate the urgency of our situation," he said. "Even as we witness devastating climate impacts causing havoc across the world, we are still not doing enough, nor moving fast enough, to prevent irreversible and catastrophic climate disruption."

We in the pulp and paper industry always need to keep an eye on any political headwinds when it comes to power and energy. You can read the report here.

Steve Roush is Vice President, Publisher and Editor of Paperitalo Publications.
