Voith Paper to Provide Quality Control System for Stora Enso's Hagen Kabel Mill

Heidenheim, Germany, 09 January 2009 -- The Hagen Kabel mill of Stora Enso Publication Paper has commissioned Voith Paper Automation with delivery of a quality control system (QCS) for the mill's No. 4 paper machine (PM 4). The existing third-party system is being replaced. The core of the delivery is a 7.40 m-wide OnQ scanner that will have five sensors. In addition, the automation system is being expanded to include OnQ GradeControl MD controls for basis weight, moisture, ash, and color. Three CD profile controls with interfaces to actuator systems of other manufacturers for the slice lip adjustment at the headbox, the steam box and the heated air jet system at the calender are further components.

In 2005, Voith Paper Automation fitted the SM 5 coating machine in Hagen with an OnQ quality control system and since then has serviced the system with a full-service contract. Through modernization of the system, essential quality improvements of paper surface characteristics were achieved. The existing full-service contract is being expanded to include the new system of the PM 4.

The Kabel mill, with a capacity of 485,000 metric tons/year, is one of the most modern and effective production facilities of Stora Enso. Altogether, two paper machines and coating machines, in conjunction with the latest finishing technology, formed the basis for an extensive program of delivery. The mill in Hagen concentrates on the manufacture of high-quality, wood-containing, coated printing papers in rolls and cut sizes. The products are used for magazines, mail-order catalogs, newspaper supplements, and other printed advertising material, and in the manufacture of school books, brochures, picture books, wall calendars, and letterheads.
