The Final Word by Jim Thompson

Something I have never seen discussed anywhere -- the Achilles' heel of recycled paper production. It is simply this: in many cases recycled production depends on source sorting by consumers, which is done for free.

Granted, as time has gone by, infrastructure systems have been designed that can take single streams, but I think most of us would be surprised to see how much of the recycled paper stream still depends on households segregating their trash, at least a first rough pass.

Fortunately, survey after survey says this process is very satisfying to most consumers -- they think they are doing something good for the earth when they do this. We need to make sure they keep feeling this way!
