The Final Word by Jim Thompson

People are getting tired of the recession. At first, people (and businesses) were in denial. Then they were scared. Now they are tired of it. This is the normal course of human emotions when an upsetting event occurs.

Since businesses are made up of people, businesses are acting the same way. I was at an industry meeting recently where one attendee had lost their job. The reaction was interesting. The balance of the room expressed condolences, but in a knowing or inevitable way, not in a manner of alarm. It was as if, oh, you are laid off, too.

Collectively reaching this mental state is very, very good. For when people get tired of something, they do something about it, individually and collectively. This state of mind will do more to change things for the better than anything any government can do.

When it is all said and done, your personal recession is something only you can do something about. You have to get off the couch, decide to change careers, and move, if necessary, and get on with life. No antirecession genie is going to walk in your front door and restore things as they were before. When you realize this, you’ll stop your personal recession.
